A sustainable future for the Earth begins with Earth Day
Year-round contributions to the Earth by Brother International Corporation (U.S.A)
April 22 is Earth Day. It is a day to raise awareness of the importance of protecting the global environment and sustainability and encourage people to take united action for the sake of the Earth and its sustainable future. Each and every one of us is called upon to think about and act on what we can do to protect the global environment.
Brother International Corporation (U.S.A) celebrates this day every year, using it as a starting point to involve many of its employees in activities that will have a positive impact on the global environment throughout the year.
Earth Day began in the U.S. and has spread around the world

Earth Day began in the U.S. in 1970 and has since spread around the world. Currently, Earth Day is led by the Earth Day Network (EarthDay.org), and more than one billion individuals, organizations such as schools and companies, non-profit organizations, and even governments and local governments in over 190 countries around the world participate in a variety of environmental protection activities and environmental education programs, such as tree planting, environmental cleanups, recycling campaigns, and promotion of renewable energy.
Earth Day is on April 22, but the event doesn't end in just one day. The week surrounding Earth Day is called Earth Week, during which a variety of activities are carried out, while the month of April is designated as Earth Month, during which longer-term activities are carried out. People can use this Earth Day as an opportunity to participate in a variety of activities, both short-term and long-term, and continue their commitment to a sustainable future of our planet.
Brother's activities in cooperation with environmental organizations and local communities

As part of its efforts to protect the global environment, Brother International Corporation (BIC) started tree planting activities in 2010 with Arbor Day Foundation, which conducts its operations mainly in the U.S. From 2012, in cooperation with Friends of the Great Swamp Wildlife Refuge, an environmental organization that supports the Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge, BIC began holding environmental conservation events for Earth Day in New Jersey, where its headquarters are located. Since 2020, the company has also been working with the Wolf River Conservancy, an environmental organization that protects the Wolf River, to clean up the river and restore vegetation in Tennessee, where the company’s logistics and support facility is located.
During Earth Month, many Brother employees in New Jersey and Tennessee work with local residents to help conserve nature reserves by planting trees, cleaning sidewalks and riverbanks, removing weeds, etc.
Brother Earth Promise overcame the COVID-19 pandemic

For Earth Day, with an eye to how we can make a greater impact on the global environment, direct participatory events have been planned and carried out in cooperation with environmental organizations and local communities. In 2020, the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, however, the global COVID-19 pandemic forced a change of plans. BIC wondered if there was anything they could do even in such a difficult situation. Then the company came up with the idea of the Brother Earth Promise, in which each employee writes down what they will do to help the global environment, such as "plant a tree" or "conserve water," takes a photo of it, and shares it on social media, pledging to do so. The program was then spread to Brother International Europe and Brother Industries, Ltd. (Japan) with great success.
This activity was carried out the following year as well and continued to encourage employees to take action for the environment. However, at the same time, BIC was facing a challenge where there was no way to measure how much positive impact each individual's diverse actions had on the global environment.
Participating in Fill it Forward, working toward one goal together

If the entire organization makes a Brother Earth Promise toward a single goal and takes actions, its impact could be measured effectively. In 2024, when the theme of Earth Day was Planet vs. Plastics, BIC set the goal as “reducing the use of single-use plastics” and decided to participate in the Fill it Forward program, which promotes the use of reusable products.
As part of this initiative, Brother gifted all employees a 30 oz Brother-branded insulated and refillable water bottle for use in their facilities. This thoughtful and sustainable gift was paired with Fill it Forward stickers, enabling employees to scan a code to track their hydration, measure their environmental impact, and unlock donations with every reuse. This small but significant step demonstrated Brother’s dedication to reducing single-use plastics and promoting a culture of sustainability across the organization.

BIC took their commitment further by sponsoring a $25,000 custom giving project with the Arbor Day Foundation, funding two vital reforestation efforts. They supported the Archie Creek Recovery Project in Oregon, restoring land devastated by the 2020 fire, and reforested 600 acres near Holly Springs National Forest in Tennessee. These efforts improve soil, water quality, and wildlife habitats while reinforcing Brother’s dedication to environmental impact.
The company set an ambitious goal: to achieve 5,000 reuses, translating to 25,000 trees planted. By August 2024, this milestone was proudly reached. Sustained employee engagement led to over 7,000 reuses in less than a year—a testament to the program’s success and the dedication of BIC’s workforce. In the end, not only did they reduce 222.36 pounds of waste diverted, 7,189.64 pounds of CO2 emissions saved and 44.47 pounds of ocean pollution prevented. The program was so successful that it was also named one of the Top 25 Fill it Forward Changemakers for 2024 among participating companies and BIC was honored as a Philanthropy Champion.
Earth Day serves as a starting point for various activities, providing employees with an opportunity to take part in efforts to protect the global environment. However, if we are to reach our sustainability goals, much more needs to be done, both as a society as a whole and as a company. We cannot be satisfied with Earth Day alone. While celebrating Earth Day each year, they continue to contribute to a sustainable future for our planet throughout the year, for example, by participating in the Corporate Beach Sweeps Program in cooperation with Clean Ocean Action, a non-profit organization, to clean up the shores of New York Bay in summer.
SDGs goal 15, "Life on Land" includes targets to protect terrestrial ecosystems and natural resources from degradation and make them sustainable, such as " ensure the conservation, restoration and sustainable use of terrestrial and inland freshwater ecosystems and their services, in particular forests, wetlands" (15.1) and "Halt deforestation, restore degraded forests and increase afforestation" (15.2). In addition, Goal 12, "Responsible Consumption and Production" includes a target of " substantially reduce waste generation through prevention, reduction, recycling and reuse" (12.5) in order to efficiently use limited resources and prevent environmental pollution. Brother is working to conserve natural resources through cleanups and reforestation in wildlife sanctuaries and rivers and to reduce single-use plastics in our daily lives so that we can pass on to future generations a beautiful Earth and an environment that is essential to all living things.
