BROTHER INTERNATIONAL EUROPE LTD. teamed up with Cool Earth, a U.K.-based NGO working with rainforest communities to halt deforestation and its impact on climate change. In collaboration with 20 Brother sales companies in Europe, the partners are working to collect consumables such as toners and ink cartridges in an effort to promote the “Cool Earth Eco-Rewards initiative,” which provides funding for local communities who want to protect their rainforest. Through the conservation of the rainforest, the partners aim to protect the many endangered species that inhabit the area as well as keeping CO2 locked in, therefore helping to tackle climate breakdown.

The forest protection organization, Tree Canada, also takes part in the activities. The newly planted trees help clean the air, filter the drinking water to keep it clean, and provide a comfortable habitat for the wild animals that inhabit the forests of Canada.

Brother sales companies in Central and South America (Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Mexico, and Peru) contribute to the protection of tropical rainforests in Latin America through the Rain Forest Rescue program of the forest protection organization, Arbor Day Foundation. Tropical rainforests are treasure troves of life—it is estimated that tropical rainforests are home to almost half of all species living on Earth. For this reason, protecting rainforests is vital for biodiversity conservation.

Forests, once destroyed, take decades to recover. Through efforts to promote rapid regeneration, the partners aim to protect the forest wildlife and the ecosystem.

As a joint project with Gujo City, employees at BROTHER INDUSTRIES LTD. and their families work with local residents to plant trees and remove weeds and vines that hinder tree growth at the 28 ha-wide Brother Forests in Gujo (Gifu Prefecture), which includes the remains of a 8 ha-wide former ski hill and a cypress forest. Since 2014, in cooperation with universities, a more effective tree planting plan was implemented and has helped to restore a rich ecosystem of the entire forest.

Besides efforts to green the desert area, the partners work to help improve the living conditions of the local people who make their livelihood by growing herbaceous species (plants that do not become trees), which are the raw materials of herbal medicine, as well as raising emus. The long-term aim of this project is to achieve a sustainable society in Inner Mongolia.

Besides being home to a large variety of species, mangrove forests are also vital in that its complex network of mangrove roots helps to limit erosion and shields coastal communities from the destructive forces of tsunamis. In recent years, however, salt and shrimp farms have contributed greatly to the rapid destruction of mangrove forests. To prevent this from happening, the company has planted saplings and installed protective walls. The reforestation project is undertaken with long-term benefits in mind.

Zhuhai Brother Industries, Ltd. has launched a tree planting activity taking place at the Seashore Park, located in Zhuhai, from 2007. Approximately 443 trees were planted by 2,446 people, including the employees of Brother and their families. The trees have grown tall, and now has become the oasis of relaxation for the local people.However, the Seashore Park has suffered from the damage caused by the typhoon in 2017. We will bring back the healthy nature, by recovering the green and planting new trees.
